This is a rare advertising handbill (flyer) promoting ticket sales for the Original Broadway engagement of KATHERINE DUNHAM and her Company of Dancers, Singers and Musicians at the Broadway Theatre in New York City beginning April 19th, 1950. (The production opened April 19th, 1950 and ran for 37 performances.) ….. The dance revue starred KATHERINE DUNHAM and the Dunham Dancers, Singers and Musicians including VANOYE AIKENS, LUCILLE ELLIS, LENWOOD MORRIS, WILBERT BRADLEY, DOLORES HARPER, MIRIAM BURTON, EDDY CLAY, LA ROSA ESTRADA, EDWARD HAWKINS, ELOISE HILL, ROSALIE KING, JON LEI, JULIO MENDEZ, JULIE ROBINSON, GORDON SIMPSON, ANNE SMITH, FRANCES TAYLOR and JACQUELINE WALCOTT ….. Biography: Katherine Dunham has been called the “Matriarch of Black Dance.” Her unprecedented blend of cultural anthropology with the artistic genre of dance in the early 1930’s, produced groundbreaking forms of movement, and in the United States, established black dance as an art form in its own right. Her professional troupe, formed in the early 1940’s, was a first for African Americans, and led the way for future notables of dance the likes of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Arthur Mitchell’s Dance Theatre of Harlem ….. CONDITION: With the exception of a fold across the middle and light creasing along the right edge, this rare handbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any dance aficionado or historian. Helen Morgan (Debut) “GEORGE WHITE SCANDALS” Erte Designs 1926 Chicago Playbill

This is a rare February 21st, 1926 program (playbill) from the Post-Broadway engagement of the Seventh Annual edition of the musical revue “GEORGE WHITE’S SCANDALS” at the Illinois Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. (The production opened June 22nd, 1925 at the Apollo Theatre in New York City and ran for 169 performances before going on the road.) ….. This series of revues, produced by White from 1919 through 1939, were given to elaborate show numbers much like the “Ziegfeld Follies”, but less ornate and cumbersome. Their comedy tended to be far more topical and, because White had been a dancer, the productions were fast paced and featured better choreography and music than similar revues. This edition featured the songs of DeSYLVA, HENDERSON and BROWN and included Costumes and Curtains designed by ERTE ….. Helen Morgan “SHOW BOAT” William Kent / Jerome Kern 1933 Chicago Program

This is a rare January 8th, 1933 program (playbill) from the Post-Broadway engagement of the classic JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical comedy “SHOW BOAT” at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. (The Original Broadway production opened December 27th, 1927 at the Ziegfeld Theatre and ran for 575 performances before going on tour. The show returned to New York’s Casino Theatre on May 19th, 1932 for an additional 180 performances before returning to the road.) ….. This masterwork by JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II remains one of the greatest of all musicals and possibly the greatest musical theatre score to date. The story starts in the 1880’s on one of the many American riverboats that featured traveling shows.
