All five have signed on a program listing for Bach’s The Passion of Our Lord According to St. Matthew, in which they all performed. Magazine signed “Robert Tear”, “Maureen Forrester”, “Margaret Price”, “Tom Krause” and “Donald Gramm”. Black ink marks on back cover in unknown hand. Color and b/w, 56 pages including covers, 8¼x10¾, bound with two staples. March 1972 edition of Performing Arts. This magazine is signed on page 23, which has a program listing for a three-night performance of Bach’s The Passion of Our Lord According to St. Matthew, performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. All five signers were scheduled to perform in this production. Lightly toned. Cover is lightly stained and rippled. Address label has been removed from left edge of front cover, leaving adhesive residue. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: English translation of Bach’s The Passion of Our Lord According to St. Matthew. B/w, 8 pages including covers, 6¾x10¼, bound with 2 staples. Translation by the Rev. Dr. Troutbeck. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition. A lyric soprano who could comfortably double as a coloratura, Welsh singer PRICE, born Margaret Bernice Price in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Wales, England in 1941, debuted as Cherubino in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in 1962 and went on to earn her reputation interpreting that composer, especially Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Pamina in The Magic Flute and the Contessa in Figaro, and Verdi. She has sung at Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Opra de Paris, the Vienna State Opera and in San Francisco and Chicago. Interestingly, despite her success in opera, she prefers to sing lieder, or romantic music songs. She was knighted in 1993. FORRESTER, born Maureen Kathleen Stewart Forrester Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1930, is possibly Canada’s most famous operatic contralto and known for her interpretations of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies and her stamina. She made her professional debut at a Montreal recital in 1953 and didn’t make her operatic premiere until 1962, in Glucks’ Orfeo ed Euridice. Since then, she’s made her name in opera in roles like the stepmother in Massenet’s Cendrillo, the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, the Countess in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmlites, with performances at the Metropolitan Opera. Fans of the TV series The Adventures of Tintin may also recognize her voice as that of Bianca Castafiore. Price was named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1986. A singer who makes up for his vocal shortcomings with a sophisticated knowledge of stage acting and sheer versatility, TEAR, born in Barry, South Wales, England in 1939, is a Welsh tenor who is most often associated with the works of British composers Benjamin Britten and Sir Michael Tippett. He debuted in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia with the English Opera Group in 1963 and since created a career playing character as well as leading roles. Tear is also a conductor, making his debut in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1985, and has made over 200 recordings. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1984. GRAMM (1927-1983), born in Milwaukee, Minnesota, was an American operatic bass-baritone who performed at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival and the Metropolitan Opera (1964-1984), as well as throughout the United States. He reportedly had a tendency to forget his lines on stage… and the ability to cover up such gaffes with brilliant improvisations. KRAUSE, born in 1934 in Helsinki, Finland, is a Finnish baritone. He was originally a psychiatrist with a medical degree from Helsinki University, but gave it up to pursue singing. He debuted in 1957 in Berlin and has been a member of the Hamburg State Opera since 1962. He debuted in America at Tanglewood in Massachusetts in 1963. French Singer YVETTE GUILBERT Concert Recital in Philadelphia 1916 Program

This is a rare four page program (playbill) from the March 28th, 1916 concert recital of French Chanteuse YVETTE GUILBERT at the Adelphi Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mme. Guilbert was assisted by EMILY GRESSER on the violin and WARD-STEPHENS at the piano ….. Biography: French Chanteuse YVETTE GUILBERT (1867 – 1944) was a cabaret singer and actress of the Belle Époque. Born into a poor family as Emma Laure Esther Guilbert, Guilbert began singing as a child but at age sixteen worked as a model at the Printemps department store in Paris. She was discovered by a journalist. She took voice and acting lessons on the side that by 1886 led to appearances on stage at smaller venues. Guilbert debuted at the Variette Theatre in 1888. She eventually sang at the popular Eldorado club, then at the Jardin de Paris before headlining in Montmartre at the Moulin Rouge in 1890. For her act, she was usually dressed in bright yellow with long black gloves and stood almost perfectly still, gesturing with her long arms as she sang. An innovator, she favored monologue-like “patter songs” (as they came to be called) and was often billed as a “diseuse” or “sayer.” The lyrics (some of them her own) were raunchy; their subjects were tragedy, lost love, and the Parisian poverty from which she had come. During the 1890’s she appeared regularly alongside another star of the time, Kam-Hill, often singing songs by Tarride. Taking her cue from the new cabaret performances, Guilbert broke and rewrote all the rules of music-hall with her audacious lyrics, and the audiences loved her. She was noted in France, England, and the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century for her songs and imitations of the common people of France. She was a favorite subject of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who made many portraits and caricatures of Guilbert and dedicated his second album of sketches to her. Sigmund Freud attended performances, including one in Vienna, and called her a favorite singer. George Bernard Shaw wrote a review highlighting her novelty. Guilbert made successful tours of England and Germany, and the United States in 1895–1896. She performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Even in her fifties, her name still had drawing power and she appeared in several silent films (including a star turn in F. W. Murnau’s Faust). She also appeared in talkies, including a role with friend, Sacha Guitry. Her recordings for La Voix de Son Maitre include the famous “Le Fiacre” as well as some of her own compositions such as “Madame Arthur.” She accompanied herself on piano for some numbers. She once gave a performance for the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, at a private party on the French Riviera. Hostesses vied to have her at their parties. In later years, Guilbert turned to writing about the Belle Époque and in 1902 two of her novels (La Vedette and Les Demi-vieilles) were published. In the 1920’s there appeared her instructional book L’art de chanter une chanson (How to Sing a Song). She also conducted schools for young girls in New York and Paris. Guilbert became a respected authority on her country’s medieval folklore and on July 9th, 1932 was awarded the Legion of Honor as the Ambassadress of French Song. Yvette Guilbert died in 1944, aged 79. She was interred in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris ….. DETAILS: The four page program measures 5 1/2″ X 11″ inches and includes production credits, concert repertoire, a photo of YVETTE GUILBERT, program notes and performance date ….. CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is soiling at the top and bottom edges, a small tear near the top, moderate creasing and minor edge wear. Despite these flaws, this rare program will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
