I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below) ....... This is a rare April 19th, 1965 playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout and American Premiere engagement of the musical comedy "PICKWICK" at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, California. (The production would open October 4th, 1965 at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City and close after only 56 performances.) ..... The British import starred HARRY SECOMBE and featured CHARLOTTE RAE, ANTON RODGERS, DAVID JONES (future star of TV's "The Monkees"), BRENDAN BARRY, JULIAN ORCHARD, OSCAR QUITAK, JOHN CALL, MICHAEL LOGAN, HELENA CARROLL, MICHAEL DARBYSHIRE, TONY SYMPSON, NANCY BARRETT, NANCY HAYWOOD, SYBIL SCOTFORD and ELIZABETH PARRISH ..... CREDITS: Book by WOLF MANKOWITZ; Music by CYRIL ORNADEL; Lyrics by LESLIE BRICUSSE; Sets designed by SEAN KENNY; Costumes designed by ROGER FURSE and PETER RICE; Choreographed by GILLIAN LYNNE; Directed by PETER COE; Produced by DAVID MERRICK in association with BERNARD DELFONT ..... DETAILS: The 56 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos .... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Business is Booming", "Debtors Lament" and "A Hell of an Election" which were cut in San Francisco ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a clipped corner to the front cover and minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
